Haere Atu!

In this lively humorous story, lots of people are enjoying themselves at the beach when two hungry sandflies, Namu and Sandy, arrive looking for lunch. The sandflies are delighted to see so much exposed skin but not surprisingly, the beachgoers don’t want to be eaten! The text is enhanced by some Māori vocabulary, the meaning of which is strongly supported by the context.

I’m the King of the Mountain

In this lively, rhythmic text, suitable for sharing across all levels, a flea boasts that he is King of the Mountain, only to have the title snatched from him by a bigger, more threatening neighbour. The title is repeatedly relinquished as bigger, more intimidating animals come along, but the clever flea, using a little trickery, wins back the day.

Matariki Breakfast describes Kara’s experience of celebrating Matariki (Māori New Year) with her whānau. It includes a retelling of a Tainui story about how the Matariki stars brought back Tama-nui-te-rā (the sun) after Māui and his brothers had caught him.
