The Emperor of Peka Peka Beach

When a sick Emperor penguin was found on Peka Peka beach, a huge amount of interest was aroused about how to deal with the penguin. Much attention, time, and money was spent on restoring and sending the penguin (named “Happy Feet” by the media) back to his Antarctic home. Opinions for and against saving just one penguin were polarised.

The Broad Street Killer

This historical recount follows the efforts of Doctor John Snow to isolate the cause of a cholera epidemic in London during the nineteenth century. In his struggle to convince the establishment of his theories, he developed a “spot map”, which identified cluster patterns of cholera deaths in areas around water pumps. Although not recognised at the time, he is now considered a pioneer in the field of disease mapping.

Hurly Burly

“Hurly Burly” is a spooky morality tale set in the New Zealand gold rush and based on Shakespeare’s Macbeth. John Macbeth is returning to camp when he sees three wild and withered creatures stirring a foul stew and incanting “double, double, toil, and trouble”. The unearthly creatures prophesise his future riches. When John returns to the camp, his brother Duncan announces that he has struck gold and asks John to head into town to register his claim. The story takes a dark turn when John’s wife Sarah encourages him to murder his brother and take the claim as his own.

In this traditional moral tale, a lion catches a mouse but lets him go after the mouse promises to help him one day. Soon afterwards, the lion gets trapped in a net and the mouse comes to his rescue.

Making a Sentence

This is a light-hearted, entertaining play that will engage students – it is set on a dairy farm where eight characters try to make a sentence. Two of the characters are nouns (animals) and the other six represent articles, a verb, an adjective, an adverb, and a full stop. This clever idea provides readers with a visual way of learning how parts of speech work to form an interesting sentence that sounds correct.
