Dawn Parade

This book presents a moving account of a child’s first experience of a dawn service. With his dad, Leo watches the marchers with their medals glinting, listens to the speeches and the “Last Post”, and joins in singing the national anthem. The article “Rise Up: The Story of the Dawn Raids and the Polynesian Panthers” recounts the story of the dawn raids that took place in Aotearoa in the 1970s. Under instruction from the government of the day, police and immigration officials invaded the homes of Polynesian people in the early hours of the morning, demanding evidence that they were lawfully living in Aotearoa.

The Anzac Button

This is the story of a button that was sewn onto the jacket of a First World War soldier. After the war, the soldier returns to New Zealand and wears the jacket to annual Anzac Day parades. Many years later, Ella, the soldier’s great-granddaughter, discovers the jacket. She sews the button onto a ribbon and proudly wears it to another Anzac Day parade. The story ends with a factual note about the meaning of Anzac Day.

Tiakina a Tangaroa

This article, about a class’s science investigation, recounts how the students compare the sea life of a “protected” marine reserve with that at an “unprotected” beach. They discover clear differences and identify the harm people do to the environment by littering. The students raise community awareness of the issue by organising a sponsored parade.

The Children’s War

After a general introduction and overview of the First World War, the article describes how the New Zealand government used a variety
of methods to encourage children to support the war effort. One method was to use the School Journal to give children positive stories
(avoiding the harsher realities) and articles about exemplary “Empire heroes”.
Underground Soldiers

In a straightforward report (supported with period photographs, a map, and a detailed diagram), this article shows the huge risks that were taken by New Zealand tunnellers during the First World War. The job of the tunnellers was to attack German positions from underground and so reduce the risks to Allied soldiers in no-man’s land. The tunnels also provided areas where wounded soldiers could be treated.
King and Country

This fictionalised story is based on the controversial issue of Māori fighting for the British Empire during the First World War. Students will need some knowledge about the history of our race relations and, in particular, the colonisation of Aotearoa by the British.
